This beautiful service is a wonderful way to begin the season of waiting for Christ’s birth. It is built around the seven Great “O” Antiphons that were traditionally sung at Vespers on the seven days prior to Christmas and eventually became the seven stanzas of the familiar Advent hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” During the service, music, Scripture readings, and prayers invite us to reflect on each of the antiphons. Seven gorgeous banners bearing the “O” Antiphon symbols, each carried in procession while its corresponding antiphon is sung, make this a visually as well as musically rich experience.
Music sung by the choir will include: Let My Prayer Come Up as the Incense (Peter Hallock); The Great “O Antiphons” (Mode 2 plainchant and Peter Hallock); O virtus sapientiae (Hildegard von Bingen); Tomorrow Go Ye Forth (Gabriel Jackson); A Tender Shoot (Kerensa Briggs); Hosanna to the Son of David (Thomas Weelkes); E’en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come (Paul Manz); Drop Down, Ye Heavens, from Above (Judith Weir); A Hymn to the Virgin (Benjamin Britten).
