An Immersive discussion inspired by August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC) is proud to present Dr. Sandra G. Shannon, the leading authority on playwright August Wilson, for a lecture inspired by CSC current production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom that explores the role of Blues women, like Ma Rainey, as conveyors and preservers of Black culture. CSC is presenting Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom from Jan. 21 – Feb. 12. Learn more here.

• History of the Blues as a response to slavery and Black oppression
• Relationship between the Blues and Black feminism
• The cultural impact of both Wilson’s words on these issues today
The evening will close with an opportunity for attendees engage in a dialogue about August Wilson, theatrical storytelling, and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. The panel will include Dr. Sandra G. Shannon, Candice Handy (Director of Education of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company), and Crystian Wiltshire (Associate Artistic Director of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company).
Dr. Sandra G. Shannon is Professor Emerita of African American Literature in the Department of English at Howard University. Widely acknowledged as the leading authority on playwright August Wilson, keynotes of her expertise include:
-Founder and current President of the August Wilson Society
-Scholar-in-Residence, August Wilson African American Cultural Center
-PI, Black Seed Grant: Centering and Celebrating Wilsonian Warriors
-Fellow and Dean Elect, College of Fellows of the American Theatre

OR • Option 2: Negative COVID PCR Test Ticketholders 5 years of age or older may show proof of a negative COVID PCR test taken within 72 hours of performance to enter. All ticket holders are required to wear face masks fitting securely over their mouth and nose while inside The Otto M. Budig Theater except when consuming food or beverage. Prolonged periods of mask removal are not permitted, and even if eating or drinking, masks must be worn when not actively eating or drinking.
