Chinese New Year Concert brings Beijing Bamboo Orchestra to Cincinnati
The Greater Cincinnati Chinese Music Society (GCCMS) is excited to present the 2016 Chinese New Year Concert on Saturday, February 20th at the Corbett Auditorium, College Conservatory of Music (CCM). This year’s concert features the Beijing Bamboo Orchestra, sheng (a Chinese mouth organ) master Jianbin Hu, and rising star cellist Yijia Fang from CCM.
The Beijing Bamboo Orchestra is the first and only bamboo instrument orchestra in China. For thousands of years, the Chinese have been making and playing music instruments made of bamboo. In addition to the more widely recognized and appreciated instruments such as di, xiao and sheng, the founder Wei Wang introduced many bamboo instruments from other southeast Asian countries and invented a few to create an orchestra with extraordinary range. With the Bamboo Orchestra, the audience is promised to experience a music festival with traditional, folk, ethnic and innovative features.
Other highlights of the concert include sheng master Jianbin, Hu from New York, who performs with YoYo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and rising star cellist Yijia, Fang from CCM who will play the Butterfly Lovers. Both soloists will perform with Maestro Mark Gibson’s CCM Philharmonia Orchestra.
“On the occasion of GCCMS’ 20th anniversary, we are thrilled to present a very special concert featuring many talented artists and unique instruments. As our previous patrons and supporters know, we have worked very hard to present high-impact events of transformative nature and bring eye-opening cultural experiences to the Greater Cincinnati area and beyond. We are confident this year’s concert offers yet another great opportunity for the community to share an extraordinary experience with us,” says Mi Shen, Chairwoman of the GCCMS board.
