Cincinnati Choral Society Performance of John Rutter’s “Requiem”

Cincinnati Choral Society

The Cincinnati Choral Society will perform John Rutter’s “Requiem” with chamber orchestra at two performances in November.

Born in 1945, John Rutter is an English composer who is primarily known for his choral works, including anthems and Christmas carols. Composed in 1985 and dedicated to his father, who died the year before, Rutter’s “Requiem” is a 35 minute musical setting of texts from the Missa pro Defunctis, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Psalms. Rutter said of this work, “I am sure that Faure’s Requiem crystallized my thoughts about the kind of Requiem I wanted to write: intimate rather than grandiose, contemplative and lyric rather than dramatic, and ultimately moving towards light rather than darkness.” John Rutter is a master of memorable melodies, about which the London Evening Standard wrote, “For the infectiousness of his melodic invention and consummate craftsmanship, Rutter has few peers.”

Free Admission.  With donations gladly accepted, the concert will be given free of charge in memory of the recent passing of CCS member, Chuck Broge.
