Dvořák's New World Symphony

Presented by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at Music Hall, Cincinnati OH

Oct 25 - 26 2019
Dvořák's New World Symphony

Dvořák muses on styles from America, blending Old and New Worlds.

Francisco COLL: Hidd’n Blue [U.S. Premiere]
DE FALLA: Nights in the Gardens of Spain
DVOŘÁK: Symphony No. 9, From the New World

  • At the height of his fame, de Falla was drawn to the Alhambra palace. The vast gardens there inspired music that rivals the greatest orchestral works of Ravel and Debussy.
  • Dvořák was lured to America by a job as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City.
  • Dvořák wrote his Ninth Symphony in a townhouse on East 17th Street, adding the title “From the New World” as an afterthought, signifying “impressions and greetings” from America.
