An 8-week painting course focused on learning to accurately perceive and effectively render the human form and environmental color. Saturdays, June 16 – August 4th. 10am-1pm.
Learning to see color quickly and accurately is one of the most important skills an artist can develop. Working directly from a nude model, students will develop their visual acuity and increase their sensitivity to color through a series of perceptual painting exercises. Short poses will provide an opportunity for alla prima painting and quick color decisions, while longer poses will allow students to explore indirect painting and more fully realized figures. In this class, students will learn how to match color that they see, how to capture the figure quickly in color, and how to translate what they see into a painting with both accuracy and poetry.
This class will cover the following topics:
- The relationship between hue, value, and saturation
- Seeing differences in color temperature
- Mixing both accurate and expressive skin tones from life
- Various methods of mark making and paint application to create a convincing illusion
- The psychological and emotional potential of color in a figurative composition
Taught by Manifest Drawing Center’s Resident Instructor Samantha Haring.
Tuition: $325 (fees also cover free admission to all Wednesday Open Figure sessions at the Drawing Center during the duration of the course)
