Darby-Lee Cemetery, Michael Peterson
Join us as we hike Bender Mountain Trail and visit a 200-year-old cemetery with a UC writer/scholar and a Cincinnati Parks naturalist.
Our October Hike + Write will be led by UC PhD candidate Bryce Bullins and Cincinnati Parks Naturalist Michael George. We’ll hike Bender Mountain Trail to the Darby-Lee family cemetery, site of a bit of Cincinnati folklore involving 19th century farmer Henry Darby who was said to have played the fiddle and hung a lantern of green glass when it was safe for people escaping slavery to cross the Ohio River. In the years after Darby’s death, visitors to the woods after dark have claimed to see a glowing green light and hear the strains of a fiddle.
On the hike, we’ll talk and write about how we memorialize the dead and natural cycles of death and rebirth.
Whether you’re a proficient outdoorsperson or new to the outdoors, we’d love to have you join us!
