Kurt Grannan’s expressionistic paintings explore our existential nooks and crannies—those universal frailties that can break us, yet more assuredly make us human. Join us at the Opening pARTy April 6th, 5:00-8:00 pm. And Thu-Sat, April 26-May 26.
Oil painter and Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Mount St. Joseph University, KURT GRANNAN’s operative philosophy bespeaks his teaching nature and artistic service: “When a creative uses their talent to address a social issue, change is on the horizon. This sort of thinking can add depth to their work and at the same time promote positive change to better humanity.” Accordingly, GRANNAN’s work is a constant struggle for understanding, communication and solution, whether the issue is societal (the opioid epidemic) or personal (the search for self and belonging). This exhibit of selected figurative work teeters between expressionistic and surreal illusion in conveying the latter. His muscular execution creates a tension between the canvas and viewer, uncertain whether we are peeling the onion from the outside, or whether the revelatory core is reaching out to us. The meeting point in that push-and-pull is the familiar feeling of being uncertain about one’s self and milieu.
