Explore the ingredients of old and new art and technology, and discuss modern and traditional womanhood as they are reflected in Cassatt’s statement painting.

This talk will address the American Impressionist masterwork Mother and Child (The Oval Mirror) by Mary Cassatt, on loan to the Taft from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It will explore the ingredients of old and new art and technology, and discuss modern and traditional womanhood as they are reflected in Cassatt’s statement painting, The Oval Mirror. Mathews is currently visiting associate professor at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Of the many books and exhibitions Mathews has produced, the best known are Cassatt and Her Circle: Selected Letters; Cassatt: The Color Prints; and Mary Cassatt: A Life.
