Karel Demel, "Les Chants de Maldoror," etching
View black and white drawings and color etchings by renowned Czech artist Karel Demel representing surrealist illustrations of the book “Songs of Maldoror.” Organized by SOS ART.
The exhibit consists of B&W drawings and color etchings by renowned Czech artist Karel Demel. They represent his surrealistic illustrations of the seminal book “Songs of Maldoror” written in the 1860’s, at age 22, by influential French author Isidore Ducasse, also known as the Comte de Lautréamont. Ducasse died 2 years later at the age of 24, and his book, discovered by chance 50 years later, became an inspirational source and a reference for the surrealists, poets and artists alike.
