MUSE, Cincinnati’s Women’s Choir presents their 36th annual fall concert with special guest Dr. Tammy Kernodle, musicologist at Miami University.
MUSE is thrilled to be working with ethnomusicologist Dr. Tammy Kernodle of Miami University to bring a performance that hearkens back to the New Spirituals Project.
This performance will weave the rich history of music and the African American experience. The musical narrative spans from the Post-Reconstruction Era to modern-day, with special emphasis on women’s voices and musical contributions surrounding civil rights issues in America. This concert will feature new commissions and arrangements by African American women composers Jacqueline Hairston, Lori Hicks, and Maria Thompson-Corley. Songs will include Nina Simone’s daring protest song “Mississippi Goddam”, Ysaye Barnwell’s “Go Down Moses”, “Strange Fruit”, made famous by renowned jazz singer Billie Holiday, and more. Plus, MUSE once again welcome Siri Imani of TRIIIBE to the stage.
