Karel Demel, "Les Chants de Maldoror," etching
Enjoy a short presentation on the MALDOROR exhibit, followed by readings by local poets of their own surrealist poems.
Join us on Saturday, September 9 from 1 to 4 pm to hear a short presentation by Saad Ghosn (SOS Art) on the exhibition and book MALDOROR: Surrealist Drawings and Prints by Czech artist Karel DEMEL.
Immediately following will be readings by local poets of their own surrealist poems and/or some of their favorite surrealist poems from other poets they know.
The exhibit, running September 1 to 28, will consist of black and white drawings and color etchings by renowned Czech artist Karel Demel. They represent his surrealistic illustrations of the seminal book “Songs of Maldoror” written in the 1860s, at age 22, by influential French author Isidore Ducasse, also known as the Comte de Lautreamont. Ducasse died 2 years later at the age of 24, and his book, discovered by chance 50 years later, became an inspirational source and a reference for the surrealists – poets and artists alike.
If you or someone you know are interested in participating and reading on September 9, please send an email to Saad Ghosn: saad.ghosn@uc.edu
