Teen Fall Class: Claiming Courageous Curiosity (Grades 8-11)

During this 6-session class, teens and young women (Grades 8-11) will use writing, art, and storytelling as a means of tapping into courageous curiosity and begin to understand one’s own story and the stories of others more deeply.

The shortest distance between two people is a story. ~Multiple citations

Courage is the most important of all virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. ~Maya Angelou

Watching the news, it seems like ethnic divides are ever-deepening. But how can we solve these complicated problems when each side lives in fear of the other? How do we cross the threshold of fear to get to know those different from ourselves, to help another being bullied…and stay safe? It starts with identity. It starts with courageous curiosity; asking a name and listening to a story. In this class, you will find support in your curiosity: Finding your story and hearing those of others; Asking, “What’s Your Name?” and naming yourself; Knowing when and how to step in and help someone else.

During this 6-class session, teens and young women in grades 8-11 will use writing, art, and storytelling as a means of tapping into courageous curiosity and begin to understand one’s own story and the stories of others more deeply. We’ll share ideas on how to: leave behind old beliefs about differences and fear, what it means to name oneself, and how asking a simple question can create connection and safety. With special guests, spoken word, role-play, and readings, we’ll explore our growing edges around asking questions, being allies for each other, and safety concerns that allow young women to more confidently identify themselves and help break down walls that divide our society.
