The Alligators of Prisoners' Lake

James Conrad has turned 50, and like many, is looking back over his life and struggling to make his way to his future. His reminiscences, especially those of his great uncle Gator, take him from a Seminole reservation in the Florida Everglades to a Devou Park lake constructed from a stone quarry by prisoners from the Covington Jail in the early 1900s.

This is the premise of “Alligator Alley,” an award-winning book written by Ludlow native Rick Robinson, who will discuss what he calls “a coming-of-age novel for people that never came of age” during the NKY History Hour on Wednesday, October 20.

Robinson has traveled to New York, Los Angeles, Paris and London to receive awards for his political thrillers. But it is a novel depicting reflections on a childhood in Ludlow and Bromley (the “Twin Cities,” he says) which Robinson calls his defining work. A graduate of Ludlow High School, Eastern Kentucky University and Chase College of Law, he and his wife Linda have recently moved back home to Northern Kentucky. He fishes at Prisoners’ Lake on a regular basis.
