Archival Scanning Session (at Evanston Recreation Center)

Saturday, March 18, 2023 — 1pm – 4pm:  With the support of an Artswave Black & Brown Artist grant, Deqah Hussein-Wetzel is currently producing a documentary video highlighting the devastating impacts of I-71 on Evanston and Avondale and I-74 on South Cumminsville, and needs help from the community to understand what these neighborhoods looked like before the highways! To do this, Deqah is partnering with the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library to host a community archival scanning session at the Evanston Recreation Center. If a resident agrees to share the scans with the Library (for their archives) and Urbanist Media (for the documentary), they will be able to scan up to 10 family photographs and documents (up to 8.5\\\’\\\’x11\\\’\\\’ in size) and; receive the digital contents on a free flash drive in return!

VIDEOS

  • In this episode, the first of our Lost Voices of Cincinnati series*, we’re exploring the history of Evanston, the home of King Records, which was pivotal to the creation of Rock n' Roll music. We not only discuss King, but also another important anchor in the neighborhood, St. Mark’s, that has also been left to deteriorate over time. We explain how the highway divided the neighborhood, and kicked off years of disinvestment. And we talk to the people who are fighting hard to preserve the neighborhood’s precious landmarks — and bring the community back together.
