Reading to Survive: #Own Voices Representation in Children\’s Literature
In this talk, author and adoptee Mariama J. Lockington will read excerpts from her debut middle grade novel For Black Girls Like Me, while discussing her personal journey with reading, writing, and the importance of seeing oneself reflected in literature as a young person. Deeply focused on the #weneeddiversebooks movement, Mariama will offer ways for audience members to diversify their own bookshelves and reading habits, providing action steps propelled by the core belief that storytelling is a powerful way to build empathy and human connection. The talk will be followed by a Q&A. Open to all. This event is via Zoom online conferencing. With gratitude and appreciation to the anonymous donor who made this event possible.
