While we have been lucky enough to already experience many of the fantastic arts the Cincinnati Tri-state offers, we had the opportunity to experience a completely new venue and offering this past weekend. It was a joyful combination of superior community theater, an artistic and intriguing venue, and an excellent reprisal of a multiple Tony Award-winning musical. The Music Man at The Carnegie in Covington, Kentucky, was an afternoon of pure entertainment – filled with high energy, humor, and non-stop song and dance!

The venue was a wonderful surprise. It is the largest and only multi-disciplinary arts venue in Northern Kentucky. They have season offerings across their art gallery, education programs (The Scripps Howard ArtStop and Go Artist Series), and theater in partnership with NKU Commonwealth Theatre Company. While waiting for the show to start, they offer show-themed cocktails and light snacks for purchase, and you have the opportunity to walk the art galleries. We were stunned by how much The Carnegie has to offer, and we look forward to experiencing their G.E.T. Together series and The Art of Food event (Feb 23-24.)

The show itself was so fun! We were a little worried that the fast-paced dialogue might not resonate with our youngest, but she loved the music, dancing and humor. Both our girls picked up on the nuances of the relationships and thoroughly enjoyed the family-friendly show; they were thrilled to see kids their own age in the production! The theater company wonderfully portrayed the story of Professor Harold Hill taking on the stubborn citizens of River City, Iowa while unexpectedly falling in love with the town’s librarian. The actors all did an amazing job delivering their witty dialogue, while singing and dancing non-stop.

A few suggestions to help enable your visit to The Carnegie include giving yourself a little extra time to park (there is a parking lot, but you may have to park a couple of blocks over pending crowd size;) bring a booster or be prepared for the little ones to sit on your lap (it is a little difficult to see from the back if you are short of stature!) and explore the many food offerings in the Covington/Newport area to make it a full event.

This arts venue offers great events for your family or simply a date night. If you haven’t ventured down to The Carnegie, take the time to explore what they have to offer…it is sure to be entertaining and enlightening!
