Cincinnati Observatory

Inspiring generations to look to the stars

The mission of the Cincinnati Observatory Center (the Observatory) will be to maintain the integrity and heritage of a historic 19th century observatory while promoting the study and practice of 21st century astronomy and science.

Our vision is to be a primary resource in furthering astronomy and science education through programming:

  • For K-12 schools and the public on and off our campus
  • For universities and classes for teacher professional development
  • To promote the rich history of the Observatory
  • To strengthen our connection to allied STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) organizations
  •

Moon Phases and Eclipses

Program description

Moon phases are perhaps the most difficult astronomical phenomenon for students to understand. With the assistance of a half-painted soccer ball, 30 moons on a stick, a 150-watt light bulb, and some great simulation software, your students are sure to become luna-tics.
