The Underground Academy of Cinematic Arts is an arts/education nonprofit that is committed to helping students discover their stories through film/media/broadcast, providing teens with educational programming, competition, award recognition, teen experiences, and community.
We values knowledge, training, and practice. Throughout the year, we provide day-long workshops, week-long summer camps, after school enrichment programs, semester courses, and social/learning experiences. We produce an annual, Midwest film festival for middle school and high school students, offering film screenings, college workshops, and an awards ceremony/reception in OTR.

Cinema History and Movements: Sept 4 – Nov 25
Mondays and Wednesdays
Cost: $495
Modeled on university film school curriculum and incorporating “production projects” where students re-create classic filmmaking techniques, this course covers the origins of cinema in the 1890s to current trends in digital media, providing future film scholars and aspiring filmmakers with historical context and understanding of motion pictures as the most powerful communication form of the 21st century.
This course focuses on visual storytelling, providing aspiring filmmakers with skills to interpret and produce films that involve a three-act story structure. Students learn to write scripts, storyboard, film, direct, and edit while exploring the use of composition, camera angles, and shots to produce music videos, film essays, and short narrative films.
Screenwriting Mechanics and Workshop
Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 – 5:30
Cost: $495
Broken into two parts that can be taken separately or together, the screenwriting course starts with elements, techniques and tips of screenwriting, focusing on story-idea development and narrative structure as part of the mechanics for writing a film script. Part two is a hands-on interactive workshop for students who are interested in applying the techniques from part one in writing their own screenplay in the course with the opportunity to present it, get feedback and revise it as part of class.
All films created in the Cinematic Arts classes are eligible for entry into the Golden Lion Awards High School Film Festival. For more information, visit www.goldenlionfilmfestival.com.
