Multimedia artist Alice Pixley Young’s immersive installations bring together a wide range of materials including cut paper, cast glass, ash, and salt, intermingled with video projections, sound, light, and shadow. Her work invokes 19th-century landscape traditions while examining environmental change in today’s natural world. Her Sinton Gallery installation will offer a contemporary counterpoint to the landscape paintings in the Taft’s permanent collection and in the Taft’s fall exhibition, The Poetry of Nature: Hudson River School Landscapes from the New-York Historical Society, which opens October 5.

Young lives and works in Cincinnati, where she maintains a studio and teaches at the School for Creative and Performing Arts. She has received grants from the City of Cincinnati, Summerfair, and the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been awarded artist residencies around the country. Her work has appeared in Sculpture Magazine and Hyperallergic and has recently been exhibited at the Governors Island Art Fair, New York; Currents International New Media Festival, Santa Fe; Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts, Grand Rapids, MI; Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, VA; and 21C Museums. Raised in Washington D.C., Young studied painting and printmaking at Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, FL; and the New York Studio Residency Program. She earned an MA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and an MFA from the University of Maryland, and is affiliated with A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.
