The Belle of Amherst
by William Luce
directed by Mike McVey
Set in Dickinson’s Amherst, Massachusetts home and spanning the years from 1830 to 1886, this one-woman tour de force makes use of her poetry, diaries, and letters to recollect her encounters with the significant people in her life, includingfamily, close friends, and acquaintances. For years, scholars have theorized that Emily Dickinson mayhave had some form of mental illness--this play gives Emily, a true nonconformist brought to life by Oxford’s own Clare Squance, the chance to answer those scholars in person, and treats the audience with a powerful evening of reminiscence, wisdom, and poetry.
