Introduction to Bellydance

Presented by Clifton Cultural Arts Center at Clifton Cultural Arts Center at Short Vine

Bellydance has its roots in ancient folk dances across the Middle East and northern Africa, with Egypt often described as the homeland of this exquisite, energetic dance. This class will teach the movement concepts that form the foundation of most styles of bellydance as well as condition participants both new and familiar to the rigors of dance. The emphasis of bellydance is, surprisingly, the hips! We’ll be focusing on these as we learn movements such as the hip circle, slides, bumps, hip drops and the famous “shimmy”. Throughout this ongoing course we’ll work on mini choreographies, “combinations” and improvise together. As a component of this class we’ll also take time to focus on core strength, balance and movement as an emotional outlet. Our goal will be to relax and reset ourselves to happiness through joyous movement! Shoes are not necessary, but not forbidden. Ballet slippers are welcome. Please bring some water so you can stay hydrated while we have fun!
