MOZART: Piano Concerto No. 20
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 8

Mozart was a revolutionary. Piano Concerto No. 20, like the highest drama of Don Giovanni and Requiem, telegraphs the Romanticism of later composers.
Reeling from world war, Shostakovich courageously regards timbers of annihilation in a symphony that defied Stalin’s propagandists.
Shostakovich's Eighth was banned in 1948 for being anti-Soviet and “ultra-individualistic.” Hearing it performed in 1962, Shostakovich was overcome with tears.
