An immersive poetry performance and open mic inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, hosted by spoken word artist Jennie Wright
Society’s Tongue Productions is pleased to present “Sankofa: At Home in Harlem,” an immersive cultural exchange and improvisational arts project celebrating the Harlem Renaissance, a watershed movement in African American arts. Using ancient Akan wisdom you will travel through time and space to 1920s -1940s Harlem, hosted by Cincinnati spoken word artist Jennie Wright.
In this interactive online event on Zoom, members of the audience assume the role of time travelers and become part of the production. You are invited to pick up an "At Home in Harlem" Cosplay kit from the Kennedy Heights Arts Center and read poetry in the open mic dressed in the garb of the times (optional). Adult and teen poets are invited to read original poetry exploring any theme (up to 5 minutes), or choose a favorite poem by a writer from the Harlem Renaissance to read.
This event is part of a multi-faceted Celebration of the Harlem Renaissance presented by Juneteenth Cincinnati in collaboration with Kennedy Heights Arts Center. More information at www.renaissanceincincy.org.
