All good writers are good noticers. They pay attention to their environments. They pause and look closely. They watch for patterns. Most importantly, they observe what interests them and they follow that interest, unsure perhaps where it will lead them but trusting that it will lead somewhere great.
Noticing is a habit that we can cultivate. During "Noticing Northside, we will practice noticing. We will take a walk around the neighborhood, making observations using as many of our senses as possible. We'll then use these observations to write—poems, vignettes, a letter of thanks to a neighbor—whatever the writer feels called to write. Finally, we'll post our writing on telephone poles around the neighborhood, hoping that others will notice them and perhaps be encouraged to practice noticing themselves.
