Opening Reception - the Art of Willis

Opening Reception - the Art of Willis "Bing" Davis

Presented by Warren County Historical Society at Harmon Museum

This exhibit by Willis "Bing" Davis, I am sure would please our patron, William Elmer Harmon. Bing's work is a testament to the far-reaching influence the Harmon Foundation had on generations of African American artists. And, frankly, Bing is one of America's treasures.

I first met Bing over 30 years ago, having admired his art for over a decade. As I watched from the wings of a small theatre, this tall, quiet man spoke of his life, his art and his creative journey to a group of teachers assembled from throughout our region. He enthralled and inspired them to embrace the creative power within themselves.

Over the next few years I knew Bing, not only as a great studio artist, but also as a teaching colleague at university. No settled artist in one idiom or medium was Bing! He invites us, in every work of art, to join him in sharing the rich heritage of African Art. He does so with color, textures and of course, magic!

On his first visit to the Harmon Museum, I watched as Bing stood quietly gazing at the portrait of Mr. Harmon over the fireplace in my office. Upon taking a seat, Bing produced two rather worn Exhibition catalogs from Harmon Foundation art exhibitions, in Harlem, in the 1920's. He turned the pages as though he were turning back time itself, and then he looked up and said, "These catalogs were given to me as a boy in South Carolina. These were my inspirations to become an artist." I know, somewhere, William Elmer Harmon is saying, "well done."

It is an honor and privilege to hold this exhibit to present the work of not only an exceptional artist but exceptional human being as well.

Mr. Davis will be present to speak with guests about his work. Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served.
