Celebrate Black History Month with this exceptional cross-curricular opportunity (Grades 6 - 12). A performance and slide show by the KSO’s Newport Ragtime Band surveys the roots of American musical heritag. The program offers ragtime, blues, Dixieland and early jazz from 1898-1933, featuring tunes by legendary black musicians/composers Scott Joplin, James Reese Europe, W.C. Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and others. Many Cincinnati connections to this music are also highlighted.
The Q & A session following the concert allows students and teachers the opportunity to ask questions of any musician on-stage. Admission is free but registration is required. The 2021-22 Education Series is supported in part by a grant from the Charles H. Dater Foundation, and Andrew Jergens Foundation. Must sign-up before February 22, 2022, but virtual access can be granted through May 1, 2022.
