This curated selection of seminal books, paired with a series of discussions, respond to water as a literal and metaphorical framework for exploring African American and African diasporic experiences and cultures. Through the selection of significant and at times unsettling texts, the installation highlights the ubiquitous traces of colonialism that extend throughout all facets of life.
Readers are encouraged to write reactions and responses on sticky notes to inspire and engage with future visitors, making it an ever-evolving installation.

This exhibition includes slow-reading group events led by Dr. Chandra Frank. The group will explore texts and ideas related to the C& Center of Unfinished Business installed in the CAC lobby and the Breaking Water exhibition. No pre-reading required, copies of short texts will be provided upon arrival.
Reading Group dates are June 26 and August 28 from 2:00-4:00. Free, but registration requested. Register here.
