This performance will be a short (15 minute) extract presented as a work in progress for Monarca Lost Butterfly (In Memoriam). Monarca Lost Butterfly (In Memorian) is a contemporary dance piece that attempts to make the audience aware, of then reflect upon the immigrants who disappear during their immigration journeys using the monarch butterfly as a symbol. Performers: Gabriel Martinez Rubio and Laura Lane.
Monarch butterflies (Mariposa monarca in Spanish), immigrate to sanctuaries in Mexico before winter in order to survive. They open their wings and take flight along a path they have never taken before. The journey is long, and not all arrive to their final destination as they become victims to predators and other dangers they find on the way. Many maintain a will to survive despite their broken wings. This project is dedicated to those without a voice, as well as those who have been lost on the way, and attempts to pay homage to those who have never been recovered.
