MUDAR/SE Julia Orquera Bianco works 2015 - 2022

The work showcased in this exhibition was created during the years 2015-2022. It is a collection of works that were produced throughout the consecutive moves experienced by the artist – first to Mexico, then to the U.S. - L.A. and finally to Cincinnati. This body of work reflects on memory, belonging and change – both geographical and spiritual. Materials are reclaimed from the everyday and put back together to speak about a willingness to start over and make a home wherever we go. Sometimes taken from the streets of Puerto Vallarta, sometimes from a neighbor’s move in Michigan, the past and the present collide to open the road to the future, in full acknowledgment of the legacy of labor and craft that the artist brings.

In Spanish, the word “mudarse” is a transitive verb that talks about a physical move. “Mudar” alone is translated into the action of shedding or changing – clothes, skin. The artist recognizes that when she moves, parts of her fall away, giving room to new aspects of the self to explore and experience.
