Melondy & Friends: Issues of Adolescence

Presented by YWCA at YWCA - Women's Art Gallery

Melondy & Friends: Issues of Adolescence features the work of Jaqueline Baerwald, whose sculptures & photographic pieces delve into issues experienced by young girls.

Fabricated from thrifted, found, or donated books, a bit of paint and wood or captured through the lens, this series is a compendium of a young life’s journey. Book titles, many of which play off childhood nursery rhymes, playground sayings or storybook expressions, create thought-provoking poems. Melondy, dressed in stripes reminiscent of prison garb, represents the average American girl growing up imprisoned by insecurities, frustrations, and fears.

Also exhibited in this show are the works of adolescent girls from Oyler School and Riverview East Academy. These young women (ages 14-18) explore images of self and how it is shaped by culture and experience. Their pieces represent not only how they see themselves at this tender moment in their lives, but also how others may see them.
