The History of Fire Marks

Presented by American Sign Museum at Unknown

Apr 06 2023
The History of Fire Marks

Before the days of cities providing firefighting services to the public, private fire insurance companies would offer their services for a fee and gave their customers with a mark as a sign their building was under the company’s protection. Learn more about this unique type of signage and its history while getting a peak at the Museum’s recently acquired fire mark collection.

About the speaker: Tom Hardy has collected fire marks since his first attendance at an annual convention of the Fire Mark Circle of the Americas in 1986. He now has over 200 U.S. marks and one of the largest such collections. Tom is on the Board and a past president of the Cincinnati Fire Museum and is on the Board of the Fire Mark Circle of the Americas serving on the Authentication Committee.
