West End and Broadway hit penned by Patrick Hamilton, this classic psycological thriller is better known from it’s 1944 film adaptation and Academy Award-winning Best Actress performance of Ingrid Bergman.
Angel Street focuses on the Manninghams who live on Angel Street in 19th century London. While everything begins with Victorian tranquility, it becomes apparent that the suavely handsome Mr. Manningham (potrayed on Broadway by a young Vincent Price) is slowly driving his gentle, devoted wife, Bella, to the brink of insanity with a cunning kindness that masks more sinister motives.
While he is out, Mrs. Manningham has an unexpected caller: Inspector Rough from Scotland Yard who is convinced that her husband is a homicidal maniac who committed murder 15 years earlier in the same house. Although set in London in the 1880’s, this mesmerizing theatre classic deals with issues still relevant today, and led to use of the term “gaslighting”.
