CCM Opera: Agrippina

Machinations, mind games and unabashed ambitions are rampant in the court of Claudius, Emperor of Rome.

Music by George Frideric Handel
Libretto by Cardinal Vincenzo Grimani
Brian McCann, conductor
Alison Pogorelc, director

No one is more adept at manipulating the political lackeys than his clever wife, Agrippina, sister of the emperor Claudius overthrew. Power-hungry and keen on revenge, Agrippina will stab just about anyone in the back to get what she wants — her son Nero seated on the throne. When Claudius names his favorite general as his successor, Agrippina will have to play her cards just right. Considered Handel’s earliest masterpiece, sex, intrigue and sharp humor fuel this biting political satire.
