In this free community masterclass, overhead projectors, black paper, light gels, and live collaboration will be used to teach the skills of shadow puppetry.
Shadow Puppeteers use flat cuts of paper to cast shadows on a screen. The shadows come together to share a story or illuminate a narrative. This manual form of cinema has existed for 2000 years and is still practiced today in many forms. In its simplest form, it is the feeling of playing with flashlights as a child and using your hands to tell silly little stories. In hopes of generating some of that childlike wonder, this masterclass will be provided free of charge.
At the Esquire Theater, local puppeteers will use a hands-on approach to teach shadow puppetry, allowing every participant to make and puppeteer their own puppets throughout the course of the class. Collaboration with local artists and local community members will also be encouraged but not required. All ages are welcome.
