Karen Saunders, Second Is The First To Lose
Second Is The First To Lose is an installation by artist Karen Saunders. The exhibit explores stereotypes and biases of gender, especially the second place treatment of women. Ceramic trophies are housed in a sports bar called “Second Place.”
We value winners. We give trophies to what’s important. First place is the winner; second place is the first to lose. Second place says, “You’ll get them next time!” or “It’s ok as long as you’re having fun!”
The venue is a sports bar called Second Place. Ceramic trophies explore what current issues are in second place. What is currently valued in society but not enough to be in first place, even though the harm to society is great? This art installation, titled Second Is The First To Lose, references issues through words on trophy name plates or a trophy falling over from the weight of carrying such heavy, lofty, seemingly unattainable issues. Or, it could be as a call and response trophy where an upside down trophy referencing a woman in a skirt that says “You Run Like A Girl” and “Bringing Home The Prize” on the same trophy. This exhibition is part of the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts (NCECA).
