YPCC Chamber Choir performs the newly commissioned Requiem for Survivors of a Pandemic by emerging composer Yvonne Freckmann. Bookending this work are excerpts from the Brahms Requiem and Faure Requiem. These composers subverted the form of the traditional Requiem, modifying it to express their own spiritual ideas within the context of their time. Brahms broke from tradition by using new texts in German rather than Latin, envisioning a Requiem that would speak to the common person. Faure expressed his own spiritual doubts while still mainly within the traditional Catholic liturgical form, shifting the audience focus from fear of damnation to rest and consolation. Freckman uses texts drawn from singer responses to their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, crafting a fully secular Requiem experience for the modern audience as it grapples with the real-world impacts of the pandemic.
