A free concert of five works by MamLuft&Co. Dance
Elena Rodriguez Moore
Climb is a work about the choreographer’s father who immigrated to America from Colombia. Featured in this performance is a lively section set to Flamenco music, followed by a duet to modern music. The creation of this work was funded in part by a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 2017-2018.
Jeanne Mam-Luft and Susan Honer
/SHIFT/ follows a community after a change in power. In this excerpt, we see survivors of a calamity grapple with their fears, ambitions, and foes. Music by composer Michael Wall features the speech given by Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator. This excerpt is one of the company’s most popular works and has been performed in Chicago, Richmond (VA), Roanoke (VA), and Charlotte (NC).
This work was created in collaboration with the original performers, including Steven Evans, Clint Fisher, Elena Rodriguez Moore, and Amber Rutledge.
Karinne Keithley Syers
Susan Honer performs this solo work, “fine, fine” by Karinne Keithley Syers, an interdisciplinary artist who won a coveted Bessie Award in 2011. Syers is a resident playwright for New Dramatists and has had her dance, writing, and production work performed in New York and across the country since 1995. “fine, fine” is quirky, lovely, nuanced, and expertly-crafted.
Susan Honer
Sean Simon
In Iceman 3000, artists Susan Honer and Sean Simon imagine what Earth may be like in the year 3000. In the full-length version of the work, a mummified iceman from the present day is discovered. In this excerpt, we see humans who have adapted to a post-glacier, aquatic world.The creation of this work was funded in part by a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 2017-2018 and created in partnership with Contemporary Arts Center.
Elena Rodriguez Moore and Susan Honer
Set to a post-modern orchestral score, “No. 3” features a visual symphony of movement. Dancers sweep, soar, and sculpt in this captivating work performed to string instruments.
