Bach Vespers at St. Thomas

Presented by Bach Ensemble at St. Thomas at St. Thomas Episcopal Church

Bach Vespers at St. Thomas

The Bach Ensemble opens its new season with Bach Vespers.

September 4
Allein, zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 33
Only upon You, Lord Jesus Christ

Composed in 1724 and first performed on September 3 of that year, Cantata 33 was part of a cycle of chorale cantatas begun by Bach earlier that year. Chorale cantatas were musically focused on a particular chorale, or hymn, of the Lutheran church. For BWV 33 it was the hymn of the same name written nearly 200 years earlier. Just as we look back to the music of Bach for inspiration, so did he and his congregants return to the music of their past. We will also celebrate the start of our 13th season of Bach Vespers with a triumphant performance of the overture to Bach’s first Orchestral Suite No. 1. The Bach Choir will sing an acapella motet by American composer Stephen Paulus, which echoes the theme of looking to our past for guidance to our future. Reception to follow
