New music performance inspired by tai chi, with demonstrations of those movements!
Wind Blows Lotus Leaves is a newly commissioned work by Owen Hopper for OLEA for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano.
It is based on a collection of movements from Guang Pian Yang tai chi. The titles in the piece reference movements found in the long form of the practice. Each movement of the piece serves as a sonic representation of the physical movement and acts as a meditation for the audience and performers. Drawing on the structuring of the seminal work for this instrumentation, Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, there are both ensemble and solo movements.”
The names of the movements are as follows:
Grasp Birds Tail
Single Whip
Wave Hands Like Clouds
High Pat On Horse
Cross Wave Of Water Lily
Bend Bow Shoot Tiger
The new music will be accompanied by a demonstration of Tai Chi movements so you may choose to move as you listen.
