Opera Rap: On McCarthyism and the Lavender Scare

An exploration of the political and social backdrop of Cincinnati Opera’s world premiere opera ‘Fellow Travelers.’

This summer’s world premiere opera Fellow Travelers follows the journey of an idealistic young man imperiled by the anxieties of Washington, D.C. at the height of the McCarthy era, when anti-communist fervor led to the persecution of so-called “sexual subversives.”

Join Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of Cincinnati Opera, and special guest David K. Johnson, award-winning author of The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government, for an exploration of the political and social backdrop of Fellow Travelers.
