Story Quilts Community Conversation: Celebrate Black History Month

An Example of a Story Quilt, created during one of our previous Community Conversations

Join Learning Through Art Inc., Wave Pool and community members in sharing stories in a safe, supportive space. This facilitated discussion encourages open community conversation about systemic racism and social justice.

Wave Pool: A Contemporary Art Fulfillment Center, in partnership with Learning Through Art, Inc. and The Well, invites community participants to join them for a special Story Quilts Community Conversation marking the first celebratory day of Black History Month in Camp Washington!

On Thursday, February 1, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., you are invited to join LTA, their partners, and members of our community at Wavepool located at 2940 Colerain Avenue, Cincinnati, OH, 45225, in Camp Washington, as we share our stories with one another in a safe and supportive space.

Story Quilts engages participants to share their truths from the patchwork of their lives, weaving stories and creating a tapestry of reconciliation and resilience alongside their Cincinnati-area neighbors.  Story Quilts provides a platform for LTA’s Arts Over ACEs Center (Adverse Childhood Experiences), to bring visual, craft, and performance art together as a foundation to guide honest and open community conversations about systemic racism and social justice – leading to truth-telling and finding reconciliation in hopes of building more resilient people and communities. This facilitated discussion will be the first to take place at the Wave Pool gallery amidst the Story Quilts touring exhibition where the largest number of our finished community Story Quilts ever exhibited together are on view.

The project’s creator and Learning Through Art Co-Founder and CEO, Kathy Wade, feels that, “Like so many cities in America, Cincinnati needs to come together to have a collective conversation about race and racism that can help us confront our difficult truths and find a way forward – to chart a future that is defined by truth, justice, and healing.” LTA feels that the first day of Black History Month is an impactful time to host an opportunity to do just that.

Story Quilt Community Conversations provide the opportunity for citizens and neighbors here in Cincinnati and beyond to join in a facilitated discussion to share their truths on systemic racism and solutions that we must all seek for reconciliation. During the event, participants will also create a quilt square – with materials we provide – to visually capture their story and become a piece of the community patchwork quilts for resilience.

We have a seat at the table for everyone!

More about Story Quilts Community Conversations & the Touring Exhibition

Learning Through Art, Inc. first organized Story Quilts Community Conversations in 2021 as part of a regional and national truth and reconciliation program in partnership with the Center for Community Resilience at The George Washington University. Community Conversation participants are citizens and neighbors from Cincinnati and beyond who join in a facilitated discussion, share their truths on systemic racism, and propose solutions that we must all seek for reconciliation.

Story Quilts: A Touring Exhibition is on display at Wave Pool Gallery from Saturday, January 13, to Saturday, March 2. This exhibition will feature a ceremonious closing whereby all of the Community Conversation constituents and partners will be invited to receive the completed quilts created at their respective hosting sites. During that closing on March 2, each quilt will be gifted to the organization’s representative in attendance, to return to its place of origin in order to hold space for and continue the conversations of our truths and reconciliation.
