A short presentation of the exhibit MALDOROR: Surrealist Drawings and Prints by Czech artist Karel DEMEL followed by readings by local poets of their own surrealist poems
The exhibit MALDOROR: Surrealist Drawings and Prints by Czech artist Karel DEMEL organized by SOS ART (running September 1 to 28) will consist of B&W drawings and color etchings by renowned Czech artist Karel Demel. They represent his surrealistic illustrations of the seminal book “Songs of Maldoror” written in the 1860’s, at age 22, by influential French author Isidore Ducasse, also known as the Comte de Lautreamont. Ducasse died 2 years later at the age of 24, and his book, discovered by chance 50 years later, became an inspirational source and a reference for the surrealists, poets and artists alike.
In conjunction with the exhibit on September 9 there will be a short presentation of the exhibit and the book, followed by readings by local poets of their own surrealist poems and/or of some of their favorite surrealist poems by other poets they know.
