Charles Gounod: A Sentimental Journey

Cincinnati Opera’s Managing Director Chris Milligan offers insights into Gounod’s 1867 adaptation of Shakespeare’s tale of “Juliet and her Romeo.”

Alongside his countrymen Jules Massenet and Camille Saint-Saëns, Charles Gounod was one of France’s leading opera composers of the 19th century. He wrote a dozen operas over his 74 years, but only Faust and Romeo and Juliet remain part of the standard repertoire. On June 17—what would have been Gounod’s 201st birthday—Cincinnati Opera’s Managing Director Chris Milligan offers insights into Gounod’s oeuvre, particularly his 1867 adaptation of Shakespeare’s tale of “Juliet and her Romeo.”.
