Gallery Talk - Byproduct Studios: Perceptions of a Material's Purpose
Molly Jo Burke and Nathan Gorgen
Please join us for an informal and informative Gallery Talk with Byproduct Studio’s Molly Jo Burke and Nathan Gorgen.
Molly Jo Burke and Nathan Gorgen’s (Cincinnati, OH) collaborative artwork focuses on the use of excess materials from their daily lives, artistic practices, and surrounding natural and built environments to create “semi-functional” artwork that recalls domestic objects, like tableware, furniture, or references to the architectural spaces that we inhabit. Of particular interest to the artists are materials that are or appear to be soft and malleable, that do, or seem to, slump, stretch, flow, drip, and squish. These qualities are shared with the human body and lend an organic or biological character to the work. They enjoy contrasting these bodily materials with rigid surfaces. The result is whimsical creations that are chaotic, joyful, and curious, challenging the audience to reconsider the environments and objects we encounter daily.
The exhibition runs January 20-March 3, 2024.
The Weston’s annual Gallery Talk Series of public lectures and informal talks provides a rare opportunity for the public to meet the presenting artists and enjoy the ensuing dialogue. Every Gallery Talk provides a unique insight into the passion, curiosity, materials, and creative process of each artist and their discipline. All talks are FREE and open to the public. Refreshments are provided.
