Apr 10 2024
Mindful Poetry Virtual Gathering (Free)

Each year during April for National Poetry Month, The Well holds virtual space for poets and poetry lovers for an hour of nourishing community and creativity. This session is #2 of 5.

The format is simple. In each session, we meditate, consider a single poem, receive a prompt, write, and then share with the group.

Poems generated by attendees during this session can be submitted for publication in our 5th anniversary of the Mindful Poetry Moments anthology!

This year’s poems have been curated by translator, vocalist, composer, poet, and educator Haleh Liza Gafori.

In this session
Poem: “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden
Mindfulness Facilitator: Trina Basu
Poem Facilitator: Eddie Gonzalez

About the Facilitators

Trina Basu (she/her) is a violinist, improviser, composer and teacher based in New York City. Born and raised in Miami, FL to parents of North American and Indian origin, Trina’s sound brings together her early influences of Western classical music, American folk music, and Indian classical raga into dialogue with jazz and improvised music to stunning effect. Her singular and expansive music has been described as “a dynamic sonic blend of uncommon mesmeric beauty” (All About Jazz) and “free-flowing, globe-spanning” (The New Yorker). Basu’s creative practice is grounded in the belief that music is a healing force. In addition to co-leading both Nakshatra, a duo project with Carnatic violinist Arun Ramamurthy, and Karavika with cellist Amali Premawardhana, Basu harnesses her background in music therapy and education to bring the power of music to schools, prisons, and hospitals. Basu’s bold and cross-cultural sound make her a much sought-after collaborator for dancers, poets and visual artists in various multidisciplinary projects. She has performed on stages like Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center and the Newport Jazz Festival with esteemed artists including Mos Def, Urban Bush Women, Gil Scott Heron, Taylor Mac, Dr. John, Imani Uzuri, Mysore Manjunath, Amir ElSaffar and the award winning Broadway musical Hadestown. Basu is a recipient of the Indo-Shastri Canadian Institute Artist-Fellowship, Brooklyn Arts Council and Jubilation Foundation. She has been an Artist-In-Resident at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute, Next Stage Arts Project, MASS MoCA and The Pocantico Center/Rockefeller Brothers Foundation. She is a co-founder of the non-profit Brooklyn Raga Massive. Basu lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and two young children.

Eddie Gonzalez (he/him) works at the intersections of creative expression and spiritual care, as well as digital media and community engagement. With a background in journalism and creative writing, he became a hospice chaplain in 2009, and over the last fourteen years has worked within healthcare and national nonprofits to create meaningful spaces for storytelling, compassionate listening, and reflective dialogue. He currently works at On Being.
Eddie has a deep interest in the relationship between inner and outer life and how the stories we tell can have profound impacts on ourselves, each other, and the natural world. He finds inspiration and solace in the arts, the outdoors, and time spent with loved ones.

Mindful Poetry Moments, incubated with The On Being Project, offers a chance to pause and reflect on poetry’s ability to encounter ourselves, the world, and the mystery of each other.

This special collaboration began as a way to provide young students an opportunity to encounter poetry in the course of a normal school day during National Poetry Month and has expanded to reach poetry lovers of all ages.
